Imagination and Virtue in Othello - Literature Essay Samples

Othello is a tragedy. But what qualities does it possess to qualify it as such? The key difference between comedy and tragedy is the ability to reconcile and tolerate the inevitable foibles of the human condition. In Othello nothing is tolerated, and nothing is reconciled. Instead, Iago provides the spark and fuel to ignite a fire that ultimately consumes all the characters. While Iagos responsibility for what occurs is undeniable, however, the subsequent events would not have been possible had a social structure enabling such a consuming fire not already been established. The tragedy of Othello occurs when the supposed virtue of the principal characters unravels into evil, enabling Iagos plan to flourish. That virtue, however, was already unstable before Iagos intervention.Immediately before committing suicide, Othello likens himself to the base Indian who threw a pearl away (5.2.356). This is significant because at this moment, Othello is recognizing himself as the ignorant barbari an that Venetian society always believed he was. Another potential phrasing of the line, based on the folio, is Judean, replacing Indian. By likening himself unto a Jew rather than a barbarian, there is a greater sense of malice afootperhaps alluding to Judas betrayal of Jesus. In either phrasing, however, Othello is condemning himself, whether as a barbarian or simply a debased human being. Both phrasings serve as a confirmation of what, one might suppose, the prevalent society may have always suspected. Othello always was an outsider. Despite that status, however, and the accompanying haze of suspicion such status brought, Othello had constructed an image of himself as a man of virtue. A courageous, noble, brave warrior and a protector of Venice. Whether or not the virtue was real or imagined is peripheral to the discussion since regardless of Othellos true nature, his outward appearance was certainly a construction necessitated by the attitudes of Venetian society at the time. As witnessed by the response of Brabanzio to hearing his daughter had been taken by Othello, and the frequency with which Othello is referred to as The Moor, the people had an expectation of what a Moor was to bea barbarian, an ignorant beast. In order for Othello to overcome that expectation he had to create an almost superhuman construct of himself. Even a man who truly was virtuous, if faced with the same cultural obstacles as Othello, would need to create an especially extraordinary exterior projection to compensate for the inherent disadvantages he had to face. In short, Othellos virtue was, at least in part, imagineda fact of which he was painfully aware.Similarly, the virtue of Desdemona was something that had to be maintained at all cost. As Desdemona herself laments after hearing of Cassios presumed fate, shortly before Othello kills her, Alas, he is betrayed, and I undone. (5.2.83). Desdemona is undone because her virtue had been destroyed (of course, shes also about to die ). Importantly, however, Desdemona never actually did anything to destroy that virtue. Instead, in this instance, virtue is something external; more a perception than a reality. Her husband Othello no longer believes that Desdemona is virtuous and so, that virtue has been destroyed, she has been undone, and death follows. The key to the unraveling of the virtue of both Desdemona and Othello lies entirely, in fact, within the realm of perceptions and their inherent unreliability: The perceptions of Othello, of Desdemona, and of the prevalent society of Venice. An individuals sense of perception is inherently flawed. Turning to the concept of radical doubt, how do we know what we think we know? The people of Venice thought they knew what a Moor was and yet Othello defied those expectations. Othello, meanwhile, knew who he himself was at a deeper level, and also what he thought Venice thought he was. The construct of virtue that Othello created for himself was based in part on what he p erceived to be the expectations of the Venetians. Pushed to its logical destination, everything Othello and the other characters did was based upon suppositions and perceptions of others. Iago poisoned that stream of perception. Once Iago introduced concepts of infidelity to Othellos perception, everything took on different meanings. Desdemonas supposed betrayal of him challenged Othellos own internal sense of strength and virility and began to eat away at the construct of virtue he was seeking to sustain. Circumstantial evidence, such as the handkerchief, became irrefutable evidence when seen through the tinted lens of Othellos enraged perceptions. The result was a crisis for Othello as he tried to reconcile his own construct of reality and himself with the constructs he perceived that Venetian society held of him, and well as his perceptions of Desdemona. Unable to reconcile the different constructs, Othello completely unraveled and retreated to the base level of the prevailing so cietys expectation of him: the ignorant barbarian. His perceptionor imaginationdefeated reason. Everything Othello had worked to establish suddenly evaporated. His status as an esteemed warrior paled when viewed in contrast to his existence as the base Indian throwing away a pearl. His descent from virtue was the substance of tragedy and the consequent corruption the very nature of evil. Aristotle decreed that tragedy occurs not when someone who is completely virtuous falls through no fault of their own. Tragedy occurs when someone who is imperfect falls not by depravity but rather, by their own frailty or imperfection. Their hamartia, or tragic flaw. Othello was not purely virtuouswhich is not to say he wasnt a good man. However, he was not perfect. In order to survive as an outsider within the Venetian culture, Othello had to imagine a construct for himself that was perfect and beyond reproach. When challenged by reality and unable to reconcile the discrepancies in his life, the virtue of Othello unwound and disaster became unavoidable.Ultimately, Iago was successful because his plan hinged upon the inevitable flaws of human perception. Once doubt was introduced into Othellos already fragile perception of his life and relationships, the inevitable consequences were set in motion. Just as order invariably seeks disorder in the universe, the human mind inevitably seeks similar disorder. Othello could not reconcile the disparate perceptions he was faced with and in response retreated to his basest level of jealousy and violence. Despite his best efforts, the initial skepticism of Venetian society was validated as virtue was corrupted into evil and Iago emerged victorious.

Essay about The Lack of Family Ties in Frankenstein

If there was ever a story advocating the fair treatment of children, it is the tale of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. Victor Frankenstein is to blame for his child’s poor behavior. Frankenstein, like many other soon-to-be-parents, irrationally sought to create life, without any conceptualization of the work it would be to rear the child. From the birth of baby, Victor refuses positive nurture of his toddler in favor of friends and his own selfish needs; his unreasonable expectations for baby, give cause to his distance from baby, he ultimately dooms his own child to a life of crime and misfortune. Immediately after the delivery, Victor catches the baby blues, and feels overwhelmed by the situation he has rendered himself with. Birth,†¦show more content†¦Victor allows his child to experience the reanimation process deserted of a guiding hand from his father. Victor neglects his child for his own selfish need for lethargic rest by passing out on his bed; a child has no choice but to imitate such unhealthy behavior from a parent. Frankenstein is human, but this amount of bad parenting in only one night, can only serve to derange the mind of Victor’s young child. Victor’s child, by no small miracle manages to gain control of his motor skills with enough sense to seek out his father. After having ignored his young ward during his first stages of life, Victor dodges his virtuous adolescent’s petition for a tender embrace. Before this nursling is more than a complete night old, his father has, through actions, shown him the disdainful nature of the world in which he has shunned him into. Hardly old enough to realize what consciousness is, this child minded man-boy is expected to cope with the hardships laid upon him. His own father, the expected light of understanding, had forsaken him naked of knowledge and sympathy in a world void of consideration. Every two seconds a child becomes an orphan. Many of these children turn to prost itution and crime; Frankenstein’s child was abandoned by Victor’s own narcissistic compulsion toward resistance of family. Of Mice And Men By John Steinbeck - 1452 Words

The novella â€Å"Of Mice and Men† by John Steinbeck (published in 1937) and the play â€Å"Death of a Salesman† by Arthur Miller (published in 1949) both focus on the idea of the American dream creating a better life for oneself in a land of opportunity. However, both texts question whether this dream is achievable or just an illusion which is unattainable. Steinbecks novella â€Å"Of Mice and Men† tells the tale of two migrant ranch workers, George and Lennie, with a dream of getting their own farm. The genuine catastrophe in â€Å"Of Mice and Men† is that Crooks, the pessimistic stable hand, was right as â€Å"nobody gets no land. It s just in their head. They re all the time talkin about it, but it s jus in their head.† Crooks is alluding to not only the literal possession but also to the fantasy of satisfaction about which these simple men dream of. Implied in the theme of the American dream is the ironic idea that the development and maturity of the characters leads to the obliteration of ones aspirations. George â€Å"matures† by killing Lennie, and in turn killing the dream that they fantasized. George survives on the grounds that he deserts his unreasonable dreams. Dreaming, then again, is mankind s only protection against an aloof world. The title of the novella itself suggests that individuals are helpless in changing their destinies and thus foreshadowing the hopelessness of the American dream. Likewise, Miller demonstrates how development and maturity prompts the destruction ofShow MoreRelatedOf Mice and Men by John Steinbeck973 Words   |  4 PagesIntroduction: I. Background A. You receive a call requesting a character reference for an employee you know to be | |unreliable and dishonest but who has not broken any rule directly. | |a. What should you tell the prospective employer? | |b. What type of information would you tell the prospective employer? | |c. How would what you share be to your advantage or disadvantage? |   | |   | |Response to Questions | | | |a) As manager of this employee, I would have to tell the prospective employer only what is factual and not elaborate on my | |suspicions. Meaning that I could not state my personal opinion about the employee being unreliable and dishonest if no rules were | |broken and the employee was never reprimanded for bad behaviors. | |b) Since this is a character reference then only character type information may be given. In this case the character reference may | |include what good qualities the employee has, a good team worker, learns quickly, etc. If there were no good characteristics, then a| |polite no thank you would have to do. |c) The advantages come in the form of not being sued by anyone for badmouthing the employee and maybe the employee will actually get | |the other job, therefore not your problem anymore. This is really a damn if I do or do not situation and has to be handled in a | |competent manner. | |The only disadvantage I can see with this situation is not being able to warn the prospective employer about the bad characteristics | |of this employee but without any reprimands or facts to back up the words it is not an option. | | | | | | | | |   | |   | |   | | Scenario Two | |   | |Mike is currently enrolled in a challenging course. His personal life is also unusually complicated by his seriously ill mother who | |lives out of state. Mike receives an e-mail from an individual who has taken this course previously and whom Mike knows did | |reasonably well in it. In the e-mail, the individual offers Mike, for a fee, all the course assignments, discussion question | |responses, and Checkpoint answers. | |a. How should Mike reply to his friend? | |b. What are the positive and negative consequences of accepting this offer? | |c. What are the positive and negative consequences of refusing this offer? |   | | | |Response to Questions | | | |a) Ethically, it would be wrong for Mike to accept his friends offer and he should decline the offer with a prompt thank you but no | |thanks. | |b) The positive consequences are obsolete if Mike has a conscience or a sense of right and wrong. The negative perhaps come in | |greater numbers by accepting hi s friends offer. First, Mike would not learn much from his course and he would not gain any knowledge | |about course material. Second, school policy indicates that we should do our own work and there is a chance Mike would plagiarize or| |be expelled from school for using another’s work. | |c) The positive consequences of refusing his friends offer comes in the form of self-satisfaction and knowing he accomplished his | |work even though other areas of life are tough. In addition, Mike can be spared any bad situations with the school if he were caught| |using another’s work. The negative consequences for Mike may be minimal after refusing his friends help if he deals with each of his| |problems one-step and day at a time. Mike may have to take a temporary break from school to deal with other things but that is only | |a sacrifice that is required in life to see positive outcomes. |   | |   | |Scenario Three | |   | | You are a politician involved in a hotly contested race to retain your  seat on the city commission. The political issues are | |important to you, but allegations have been raised that your opponent is leaving his wife for a younger woman. These allegations are | |unproven. Your campaign advisors have urged you to release this information to help your campaign. | |a. What moral and ethical considerations come into play when making this decision? | |b. What are the positive and negative consequences of using the information? | |c. What are the positive and negative consequences of not using the information? |   | |   | |   | |Response to Questions | |   | |a) The moral and ethical considerations center on what is right and what is wrong when it comes to serving those that vote for me as | |a politician. If the political issues are important to me then I would want to run the race as legitimate as possible. Ethically it | |would be wrong to exploit the other opponent in such a way that says I would stoop to any level to maintain my seat on the city | |commission. | |b) I really don’t see any positive consequence if I use the derogatory information because I will know what I did was wrong. The | |negative consequences would be various. Using the information could affect any respect my staff had for me, it could backfire and | |cause me to lose the race, and I would know what I did was wrong and it would play into future decisions. | |c) I can only relate the positive consequences of not using the information as the negative are obsolete. Sure, I could lose the | |race to my opponent by not using the information but that is not really a negative consequence because I know I did things right and | |morally. The positives know I ran the race honestly without hard balling anyone and possibly ruining my own credibility. This sort | |of behavior can follow an individual for the rest of their career so it is always better to do things honestly. | Reflection Question: Discuss whether you generally make ethical decisions using a traditional or a modern ethical model. Provide an example using an experience you have had in your daily life. I truly think I am more of a traditional type decision maker where treating others with respect and honesty is most important for good outcomes. I also feel some of the modern way of thinking is helpful especially when dealing with work issues. My ethical decisions are made based on what I feel is right and wrong, which is something that has always been a strong force within me. An example of an experience I have had is recent and is something I have always taught my child. My son and I were visiting the park a few weeks ago and we found a wallet with everything intact including money. My first instinct was to look in the wallet for some sort of identification (possibly a phone number) and contact the owner. This information was available so I used my cell to call the individual and they came right down to pick the wallet up. They were so relieved that someone would actually call and return their property. I simply replied that I hoped if it were my wallet that the same would happen for me because that is the right thing to do. Not only did I make someone’s day better but I also set a very good visual example for my two-year-old son. While he may not understand what I did, he will have an example of respect and honesty which are two values and ethics I want to instill in him. How to cite Ethical Decisions Scenario, Papers

Role of the Nurses in Infection Control-Free-Samples for Students

Question: Discuss about the Role of the Nurses in Infection Control. Answer: Introduction: The issue of hospital cleanliness has been prevalent for years. People have been sharing their concern about the hospital cleanliness and hospital acquired infections. The WHO (World Health Organization) has also recognized the problem. Patients are the primary concern for the nurses, as they have to stay near to the patients for almost 24 hours and 7 days in every circumstance. Albeit the presence of the caregivers, the patients are not safe just because they are present in the hospital setting. The report will highlight the involvement of nurses in infection control. This report will also discuss the overall guideline for infection control. Background: In the year of 1854, Florence Nightingale first identified the relationship between nursing and hygiene while serving at a military hospital in Scutari. She assumed that if the hygienic condition of the hospital improves, the mortality rate among the soldiers would also decrease. Discussion: Every nurse should know about the basics of infection control. Every hospital should have an infection control nurse who would maintain the extent of infection control in the hospital. The hospital authority and the infection control nurse should have to follow a program to educate the other nurses and ward staff. How to promote the infection control practice in hospitals: There are many hospital-acquired infections, which cannot be prevented, but there are some, which can. Any pathogen infection has three elements to consider- a source, a host and the way of transmission. As small children, we learn the most basic lesson of personal hygiene to prevent the infection, which is hand hygiene. Despite every healthcare workers and nurses knows about hand hygiene, it can be seen that the healthcare workers of many remote area does not wash their hands properly. There are three basic strategies, which is simple enough to use and implement for the infection control in the hospitals, that is, education, intervention and evaluation (Krein et al 2012). Education: The most basic practice for any strategy is knowledge. The healthcare workers including the nurses should acquire the basic knowledge about hygiene before implementing it in a hospital setting. The hygiene promotion posters, videos, conference and diagrams can provide the required knowledge to the healthcare. The nurses should acquire a degree in infection control apart from earning a bachelor degree in nursing. The criteria of being an infection control nurse should include experience, which can be acquired through volunteering in any clinical setting (Sargenti et al. 2015). Intervention: The hospital management should imply varieties of intervention to ensure that the healthcare workers are maintaining the common hygiene. The hospital management should place alcohol based hand sanitizer in every room of the hospital, including the waiting rooms and the staff workstation. There should be automatic sinks placed to the exit of each room. The staffs should clean the frequently handled equipments using some alcohol based wipes (Scherbaum et al. 2014). Evaluation: To evaluate the situation, the hospital authority should use the surveillance system to monitor if the nurses are maintaining the basic hygiene in the hospital. The nurse managers should spot check the compliance (Anderson 2014). The idea of an infection control program: The health authority of the country or the province should build up a program to support the hospitals to reduce the infection risk. These programs must have to develop and update the guidelines to upgrade the evaluation system. The program should have set relevant objectives about infection control. The program should review all the risks, which is associated with new technologies. The program should also include the monitoring program that would evaluate the risk of acquiring an infection. The infection control manual: Every hospital should have a manual containing the instructions about the infection control system. This manual should also contain the common practices, which are used in an ideal healthcare setting to avoid infections. An experienced infection control nurse should write this manual. This manual should also be upgraded every year and the committee should review this upgradation (Franck et al. 2015). Skills of the infection control nurses: An infection control nurse should acquire multi-tiered skills and nursing experience to know about the basic epidemiology of the disease, the origin of the disease and the causes of the disease (Scherbaum et al. 2014). An infection control nurse should- Monitoring: An infection control nursing staff should monitor the clinical setting to see if there is any occurrence of infection there. The infection control nurse should keep all the data about the patients and the types of the infection occurrence (Jacqueline, and Dyan 2009). Prevention: An infection control staff has to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines andthe Centers of Medicare Services (CMS) guidelines to ensure that the hospital setting is working to reduce the infection occurrence. Reporting: The reporting task can be distributed to many levels as every healthcare professional and the nurses should take records and evaluate the situation of the acquired infection to the bottom level. This information can be relayed to the infection control committees to evaluate the ongoing procedures and the policies (Alfa et al. 2015). Adherence: This process is also a multi-level task as the hospital authority should revaluate if the nursing staffs are adhering to the guidelines for infection control. The infection control nurses should take charge and evaluate every setting of the hospital to make sure that if the infection control guidelines are being followed. Common precautions to be taken by the nurses: The nurses should take some common precaution to treat every patient in the hospital. The standard practice should involve those facilities, which are needed to provide the patients with protection from the hospital germs (Dancer 2014). The facility should include antiseptic and alcohol based hand sanitizer. Every nurse should own their own protective equipments while handling blood, and other bodily substances such as urine and stool. The nurses should maintain the cleanliness of the hospital. The nurses should handle the waste products properly. The linens of the hospital beds should be washed with proper detergent and should be soaked in an antiseptic solution to remove the germ. Conclusion: In a hospital setting, a healthcare worker frequently comes across patients with pathogens and the pathogens are transmitted from one patient to another patient. This problem is becoming huge day by day and might not go away in a moment. Although, this problem is avoidable if the nurses takes the initiative and devote their ample time to the infection control program. This should reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections among the patients. References: Alfa, M.J., Lo, E., Olson, N., MacRae, M. and Buelow-Smith, L., 2015. Writing the Century

Writing the Century Writing the Century Writing the Century By Maeve Maddox Melvin Merzon sets me this multi-part question: How would you write 21st Century?  In a legal document? In a business letter? In fiction? In   a   nonfiction context?    21st Century? 21st century? Twenty-first Century? Twenty-First Century? twenty-first century? My short answer for all specified contexts is twenty-first century. Unless the name of the century begins a sentence or is part of a proper name, it is written in all lowercase letters: We are living in the twenty-first century. When a century is part of a proper name, no hard and fast rule can apply. Someone naming a program, company or a book may express the century any way they wish: Twenty-first Century Scholars Twenty-First Century Foundation Twenty-First-Century Gateways (In this book title the century name has become an adjective.) 20th Century Fox Century 21 Realty Newspaper headline writers may also exercise freedom when writing the century: New Year Rings in 21st Century Bottom line: go with twenty-first century unless there is some reason not tofor example, contrary guidelines in a style manual you are required to follow. Writing the Decades Decades may be spelled out or expressed in numerals: the eighties the 1980s NOTE: Theres no apostrophe between the numerals and the letter s. The same rule about capitalization applies to decades as to centuries: if the decade is part of a proper name or title, it will be capitalized; otherwise leave it in lowercase. For example, write the nineties, but the Gay Nineties Referring to the first two decades of a century can be tricky. For example, if you want to talk about the first decade of the century, you cant write the 1900s, or the 2000s because too many readers would assume youre referring to the entire century. Another problem is that not all authors agree as to what years are included in a decade. Is the first decade of the 1900s 1900 to 1909, or 1900-1910? And what about the second decade? Some writers talk about the teens of a century, but what about the years ending in -10, -11, and -12? When writing about the first two decades of a century, its probably best to be a little wordy for the sake of clarity. For example: History seemed to repeat itself in the decade 2000-2009. Chemical Synapses Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Chemical Synapses - Essay Example The process that must occur in the presynaptic axon is a series of events that lead to release of a neurotransmitter. An action potential in the presynaptic cell causes Ca2+ channels to open. An influx of Ca2+ into the presynaptic terminal causes the neurotransmitter, which is stored in synaptic vesicles, to be released by exocytosis. The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synaptic cleft, binds to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, and produces a change in membrane potential on the postsynaptic cell. The change in membrane potential on the postsynaptic cell membrane can be either excitatory or inhibitory, depending on the nature of the neurotransmitter released from the presynaptic nerve terminal. If the neurotransmitter is excitatory, it causes depolarization of the postsynaptic cell; if the neurotransmitter is inhibitory, it causes hyperpolarization of the postsynaptic cell. Local currents depolarize each adjacent region to threshold. Finally, the presynaptic terminal is depolarized, and this depolarization causes voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in the presynaptic membrane to open. When these Ca2+ channels open, the Ca2+ permeability of the presynaptic terminal increases, and Ca2+ flows into the terminal down its electrochemical gradient. Ca2+ uptake into the terminal causes release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), which has been previously synthesized and stored in synaptic vesicles. To release ACh, the synaptic vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane and empty their contents into the synaptic cleft by exocytosis. ACh is formed from acetyl coenzyme A (Acetyl CoA) and choline by the action of the enzyme choline acetyltransferase.

Anger and Violence in Of Mice and Men Essays -- literary Analysis, stei

In ‘Of Mice and Men,’ anger and violence is of common recurrence. Anger, as shown by many characters, is always around because of fear, jealousy and anxiety. Lennie †¨is always the source of this anger, whether it be toward him, because †¨of him, or from him. One of the first characters to portray anger in John Steinbeck’s Novel is George, Lennies companion. Straight away in the Novel, anger is shown towards †¨Lennie, Georges anger is because Lennie wants something they do not have, and because it is Lennie who is ‘pleading,’ George is Expected to have it. This is only due to Lennies innocence. George tells him, "Well we aint got no ketchup!" his anger is clearly †¨out of frustration, as he goes on to talk about how he could do "Whatever the hell" he liked if Lennie wasn't around. "I could get my †¨50 bucks at the end of the month and go sit in a cat house and enjoy myself, but no, I'm stuck with you". George is almost saying that Lennie is a burden to him and that if Lennie were to leave George alone, then George would have a more relaxed life. All of this anger that George is giving to Lennie is because George is frustrated at not being able to further his life in a way in which he wants to. Also George and Lennie (and all the other ranch workers) have a dream, when this dream is broken and will never happen, all of the workers get angry and violent to others on the ranch showing their frustration and how they will never get a sense of security, comfort or companions. The first example we see of this, is when Carlson bullies Curley in forcing Curley to let his dog be killed and gotten rid of because â€Å"He ain’t no good to you, Candy. An’ he ain’t no good to himself.† Carlson feels important and in-charge, just like he wanted to be (... ...e barn is because she had a chance to achieve everything she wanted; fame, fortune and glamour and because she fails at becoming an actress and spends her life with a man she hates with only glamour of the three she wanted, she gets very angry and when people do not pay attention to her, such as when Lennie, Candy and Crooks are all in Crooks’ room and she goes there for attention but is told to go away she resorts to anger telling them that she could get them â€Å"strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny† and this showing that she can no longer be turned away by people and takes out years of agony of her dream never coming true on these three guys. As seen in the Novel, most acts of anger and violence are down to failed dreams and hope, with the one or two exceptions and that they are both ways of letting how you feel known and a way to make you feel better.

Clothing and its importance in Society Essay

There is a very common saying, â€Å"The way you dress, you will be judged.† Some people do not believe this is true, they say is more important your character than your status quo, your thoughts than the car you drive etc. But today, we are living in a very corrupted and materialist world, where those second things like material possessions and appearance are taking first place on people’s priorities. This is because fashion builds the person ´s identity. That’s why we should understand that clothing and fashion is important today as it was yesterday and will be in the future. For hundreds of years people have put some message in the type of clothing they wear. Long ago people started wanting to stand out from the â€Å"crowd† and be different changing their clothing. Some examples of these â€Å"standing out† became very popular and were followed by more people. This was the moment when fashion appeared. see more:essay on fashions Nowadays, fashion is defined for Malcolm Barnard a fashion reporter as a â€Å"constantly changing trend, favored for frivolous rather than practical, logical, or intellectual reasons†. Nevertheless, it is necessary to say that at the present moment fashion has a deeper influence on the life of people and possess more than just frivolous reasons for its existence. Clothing has become an integral part of self-realization of every person. It is no longer just an â€Å"external shield† and a frivolous attitude towards it may cause losing a very important physical, psychological and social aspect of a person’s life. This covering is a need, a necessity that is dictated by the norms of social conduct. This â€Å"necessity† brings a lot of variety into the lives of people and makes their image more complete. It is not about people serving fashion; it is about fashion being a slave of people. This is something we should pay attention. The type of clothing completely depends on the person who is wearing it; therefore it becomes a reflection of his perception of himself, which leads us to the term, â€Å"personal identity†. The choice of clothing and accessories is as important as identification through the color of hair, height, skin and gender. Clothing nowadays is a media of information about the person wearing it. As every cloth carries a strong message about its owner, every owner â€Å"nests† a certain value in it depending on his temperament, mindset or today’s mood. Therefore, the clothing of a person is a mean of communication with the outside world. It is the way of telling people about the â€Å"state† of it owner. Communication is also a sing expressed by clothing. This especially touches extraordinarily in clothing or an obvious lack of taste and vulgarity. Malcolm Barnard in his book â€Å"Fashion as communication† makes a great work by outlining cultural roles, rules , rituals, and responsibilities that are maintained and constructed by fashion. Fashion is compared to art. It is like an architect that gives his creation any shape he desires and at the same time is the reflection of the architect’s belonging to a certain social level, a certain psychological condition and so on. The message that clothing contains is basically a way of nonverbal communication with gender, ethical and power aspects. Clothes have an immense impact on the perception of people around and on the perception of the person wearing them, too. A suit can make a person feel more confident and organized, which would eventually change even the gestures and the manner of talking of the person or for instance wearing jeans after a suit may change the conduct of a person to a very liberal and feeble one. The perception of people around can be very predictable in terms of their reaction on a person wearing this or that style of clothing. Fashion is one of the most powerful means of communication, which sometimes may play a vital role in the life of a person. So, fashion is a very important tool of manipulation while communicating besides its importance in social class, culture, sex and gender relations of people. Clothing is a fundamental part in the image of a contemporary man or a woman. The image is constructed for various reasons and has various manifestations. Dressing has become a way to create, to reveal and to conceal information from the external observers. Fashion has always been considered to have more of a women based orientation. As soon as women realized that experimenting with their clothing might bring them the results they need they became the most interested consumers and the demand on women’s production increased greatly. Women, have a great impact on the development of fashion worldwide. Of course one of the primary messages clothes carry is the social message. Women throughout the time have tried to make the clothing look more luxurious. Historically the social message has wildly transformed. It is very easily trace in Diana Crane’s book â€Å"Fashion and it social agendas†. Nowadays clothing is not an attribute of belonging to a clan, or to a restrained social level though it still can tell a lot about the financial status of a person. A person, especially a women is always greeted according to the way is dressed up. Therefore women may cause desirable reaction by knowing the expectations of the â€Å"opponent†. Historically, women wore traditional dresses, which signified their cultural and social status. As for now, traditional clothing has been completely subdued by â€Å"fashionable clothing†. Women clothing in the past had a lot to do with emphasizing femininity, neglecting man-like forms of dressing. Women become less ladylike but more aggressive and businesslike. A woman is opposed to a man. Women have accepted a lot of clothing styles that propagandize masculinity. Of course there still are women that are the embodiments of tenderness and femininity preserving women’s sexuality but nevertheless the general tendency of feminization in today’s society has done its work. Equality at work, business and politics has transformed the image of a woman greatly. It is no surprise to any of the people who at least know what fashion is that the clothes that people wear are usually very symbolic. The symbolism of clothing is another part of delivering the message that a person tries to put into it. Originally, a symbol is a facility that is used to express feelings or belonging to some group of class often dealing with power and wealth. Expression of symbols through clothing is a very popular tendency nowadays. Symbolism in clothing may point to the profession the person is dedicated to. The perception of symbols is not the same as the perception of the whole clothing image of an individual, because people may interpret the same symbol differently and therefore the understanding of the carrier of the symbol will be completely different. For instance, a man with a tiger on this T-shit may seem aggressive to one person and a Green Peace member for another one. A bird may be a symbol of freedom and somebody can view it a symbol of light-mindedness. Every person has to be very careful with the symbol while visiting a foreign country, due to the double meaning of the symbols that may be offending to the culture the person is in. The goal of every symbol is to share information. As every person belongs to a definite culture and has the right to reveal it, personal identity may sometimes be replaced by cultural identity. Clothing in terms of culture is to reveal either the historical roots of a person or the roots the group he belongs to. The oriental-followers are easily defined from the crowd by the specific collars and style of dressing they hold on to. Demonstrating a belonging to a certain cultural community is the free right of every person like people that freely declare who they are going to vote for. Talking about culture it is possible to mention that nowadays exist â€Å"material culture† that dictates its own ways and code of dressing. The liberation of culture off the borders made the cultural fashion developments increase dramatically. Wearing a cowboy hat may not be a sign of being from Texas, but a sign of political preference. For instance it is very easy to distinguish a European from a Hindu by the style of dressing or an Indian woman from an oriental woman by the distinctive spot on the forehead of an Indian woman and a veil worn by Moslem woman. Fashion has taken the best part of the traditional costumes of every culture and sometimes this leads to propagandizing a definite cultural group. Fashion and identity are inseparable companions. Fashion with all its symbolism and attributes form an outstanding base for personal and cultural identification. Identity is a necessary process of a healthy personality as it is a part of self-realization of a person that is so much required for finding a place in life of every person. Fashion has become a tool for achieving harmony with the inner world and a way of revealing or concealing peculiarities. Fashion possesses a specific meaning and the more diverse is the society around us the more fashion-trend will appear and surprise us. As long as it does not hurt people around fashion symbols are acceptable, nevertheless while thinking about fashion and identity it is necessary to remember the ethical side of the issue. Fashion and identity through it still remains a twofold issue but there are a lot of positive aspects one can enjoy and share with other people. Reference Page Barnard, M. (2002.)
